Top 20 of 2012: 18. Flying Lotus – Until the Quiet Comes

18. Flying Lotus – Until the Quiet Comes

Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet ComesIt’s been a big year for Steven Ellison. In between sold-out shows and creating a mysterious rap persona named Captain Murphy, he found time to release the third Flying Lotus record.

Until the Quiet Comes features incredible beats, but focuses more on moods and atmospheres. While the beats are still essential to his music, the real feeling comes from FlyLo’s sweeping soundscapes.

Ellison’s combination of samples, beats and low, humming bass made Until the Quiet Comes nocturnal but not dark (except maybe Thom Yorke’s appearance on “Electric Candyman”). Niki Randa, Thundercat and Erykah Badu added AM jazz vocals that gave the album even more warmth.

Flying Lotus remixes Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You”

Flying LotusI try not to post many remixes, but this one is too good to resist. Production genius Flying Lotus — whose new album is going to blow minds — remixed Frank Ocean‘s “Thinkin Bout You.” FlyLo shared an unfinished version of his remix on SoundCloud, which was later taken down, under the title “binge eating without you.”

Ocean’s original version already takes weeks to get out of my head, but this high-pitched falsetto-sounding version somehow makes it even catchier.

Check out the remix below. Frank Ocean’s channel ORANGE is out now on Def Jam, and Flying Lotus’ Until the Quiet Comes is out October 2 on Warp.

Flying Lotus – “See Thru to U” (ft. Erykah Badu)

Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet ComesFlying Lotus just released the first cut off his new album, Until the Quiet Comes. The new single, “See Thru to U,” features guest vocals from Erykah Badu.

Tornado basslines blow through the drums, bouncing between stereo channels, but FlyLo’s jazz is perfectly controlled. It’s reined in even further by Badu’s short, smooth lines.

The pairing is perfect, and Until the Quiet Comes promises much more, with guest appearances by Niki Randa, Laura Darlington, Thundercat and Thom Yorke. It comes out October 2 via Warp.

Flying Lotus – “lamentedmix3” and “Between Friends” (Instrumentals)

Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus just released two new instrumental tracks, “lamentedmix3” and “Between Friends,” via his SoundCloud.

“Between Friends” just came out as part of the Adult Swim Single Series, featuring rappers Earl Sweatshirt (Odd Future) and Captain Murphy, but this alternate version features help from Stephen Bruner — who’s best known to FlyLo fans as Thundercat, but he’s also the bassist for Suicidal Tendencies.

Flying Lotus also put up a new song, titled “lamentedmix3.” Neither of these made it onto the follow up to 2010’s Cosmogramma, but they’re both great listens.

His new album, Until the Quiet Comes will be out October 2 via Warp.

Flying Lotus – “Between Friends” (feat. Earl Sweatshirt and Captain Murphy)

Flying Lotus - Between Friends featuring Earl Sweatshirt and Captain MurphyThe Adult Swim Single Series has been releasing free music all summer. Wye Oak, the Field and Unknown Mortal Orchestra have all offered exclusive tracks for download from the series.

The latest entry might be the best yet. “Between Friends” brings together production genius (and Adult Swim bumper music mainstay) Flying Lotus, Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt, and Captain Murphy.

The slick new track has us really excited for Flying Lotus’ upcoming album, Until the Quiet Comes, which boasts appearances from Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Erykah Badu and Thundercat.

Top 20 of 2010: 19. Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma

19. Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma

Flying Lotus - CosmogrammaProducer Flying Lotus’ third album, Cosmogramma, pushes the boundaries of electronic music. The self-described “space opera” is experimental but extremely technical and cohesive. Musically, Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, offers a cosmic amalgamation of jazz and electronica. Spiritually, it’s an endeavor in Afrofuturism, taking cues from musicians like Sun Ra.

In addition to the jazz riffs and rhythms throughout the album, Cosmogramma is fueled by the spirits of Ellison’s late aunt and uncle, Alice and John Coltrane.

“Pickled!” is a perfect example of the feel of the album. Its quick-paced beats are coupled with a powerful jazz bass line. Other highlights include Ellison’s work with his cousin, tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, on the tracks “Arkestry” and “German Haircut.” Cosmogramma shows Flying Lotus pushing not only himself, but an entire genre into the future.
